Roanoke Island, North Carolina

When we were on vacation in the Outer Banks, I really wanted to try and take a day trip or two. Since I had never been there before, I didn't really know that there are not a lot of things to DO down there- it's more about hanging out with family and friends at the house you rent. Playing games, visiting, sitting out on the deck and beach... But, there was one place about an hour away called Roanoke Island that Darrel and I decided to go check out.

Roanoke Island is all about the "Lost Colony". The story goes that there was a settlement of about 300 people there, and they literally all just disappeared one day. People wonder if they set out to explore a nearby island and didn't make it, but no one really know. They have a show about it that you can go to, but it doesn't start until June, so we just read up about it before we went.

We visited the Elizabethian Gardens, which is a botanical memorial to the Lost Colony. They were beautiful! Unfortunately it was a little early in the year for all of the flowers to be out, but we spent time walking around and checking them out.
We tried to walk around the town a little bit, but is was just too windy. I got ice cream, and my hair was literally blowing into my mouth and into the cone. It's like we were forcing ourselves to be out doing this because it was vacation, but I looked at Darrel who didn't look too pleased, and we decided to head back after only a few hours.
It was a nice little trip to get out of the house for a few hours on a windy day!
